dc.description.abstractThis work presents the modeling of an adiabatic compressed air energy storage (ACAES) plant. The system uses surplus electricity from the grid, typically during periods of high photovoltaic generation or low market prices, to compress air through a compression train. The thermal energy generated during compression is stored in packed-bed systems, while the compressed air is stored in an isochoric cavern. An economic analysis of the ACAES system for the specific case of the Spanish spot price market is conducted. This represents a realistic market framework, as electricity prices fluctuate due to variations in renewable generation—particularly solar power—and demand. Relatively few studies have investigated how this price variability affects the economic performance of ACAES systems. The results obtained indicate dynamic payback periods in the range of 9–15 years, suggesting a favorable economic outlook under current market conditions.
