This final degree project aims to evaluate the feasibility of the isometric method as an alternative tool for determining the shrinkage temperature (Ts) of leather, a key parameter for assessing its thermal stability. Experimental tanning trials were carried out on bovine hides using three different tanning agents: basic aluminum salts, chromium(III) with 33% basicity, and chromium(III) with 42% basicity. The resulting samples were then analyzed using the isometric method, which records the force exerted by the leather during progressive heating in an aqueous medium. The results were compared with the values obtained using the ISO 3380 standard, and parameters such as T₀, Tc, Tm, Tf, and ∆T were evaluated. The results show that leather tanned with chromium 33 exhibits the highest thermal stability, followed by chromium 42, and finally aluminum. The study concludes that the isometric method is an effective, reproducible, and accessible tool for objectively evaluating the thermal resistance of leather, proving especially useful in industrial contexts where rapid and low-cost characterization is required.
