MS h-I-13 of the Library of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, a mid-fourteenth to early fifteenth century codex, contains nine Castilian translations of medieval French tales that can be divided by genre in order of appearance: three saints’ lives, two martyrdoms and four romances. The codex is a coherently organized anthology of legends by the compilation of these stories according to textual patterns, motifs and character types that create a tightly woven web of correspondences. The present work shows evidence of the compilation, considering the connections, the echoes and the analogies among all of these works through the references to the medieval practices of reading and writing in the legends.
