- ItemOpen Access"Our story" Between universal History and national History. From Eusebiu of Caesarea to Bossuet(Edicions de la Universitat de Lleida, 2025) Moeglin, Jean-MarieThe end of Antiquity saw the construction of a collective Christian “we” in the context of the shaping of universal history by authors such as Eusebius of Caesarea and Orosius. During the early Middle Ages, this collective Christian “we” did not prevent the development of particularistic “we’s”, enabling various groups to write “our history”, although this was limited to the contemporary period and did not challenge the preponderance of the collective “we” of Christians on their way to the Parousia. From the eleventh to the thirteenth centuries, we see a break between universal history, which is still very much alive, and the emergence of a ‘national’ history that makes the ‘national’ community a full player in history. Another collective “we” could then assert itself as a decisive actor in history, in competition with the Christian “we” at work in universal history. But it was not until the modern era that historians truly emphasised this national “we” and made it the decisive actor in the history they were telling.
- ItemOpen AccessThe Concept of ‘Nation’ in the Parliamentarism of medieval Catalonia(Edicions de la Universitat de Lleida, 2025) Palomo, CristianThis article presents a quantitative, chronological, linguistic, and semantic analysis of the concept of ‘nation’ as it appears in the minutes of the Peace and Truce Councils and the General Courts and Parliaments of Catalonia between 1173 and 1479. It focuses on the evolution, politicisation and semantics of the concept, distinguishing between meanings that refer to non-Catalan groups and those that directly reference Catalans, whether as natives of the Principality of Catalonia and the counties of Roussillon and Cerdanya, as part of the group of Catalan-speaking Christians or as part or all of the subjects of the Crown of Aragon.
- ItemOpen AccessFeatures of Reflection of Historical Events in Turkic-Speaking Medieval Literature(Edicions de la Universitat de Lleida, 2025) Rysbekov, Tuyakbay; Rysbekova, Saltanat; Shintimirova, BayanThis study explores key parameters of historical time representation in Middle Ages Turkic fiction, focusing on the Kitabi dede Korkut. For this research, selective literary analysis was used to compare different parts of how the past was shown in Middle Ages Turkic-language texts. The reproduction of historical time, focusing on folklore stories from the eleventh and twelfth centuries and introducing them into history, mixing real and fantastic elements, and providing detailed descriptions of places without giving dates were studied. This work can be used to compare national literatures, particularly European and Turkic prose and poetic works, to study the ways and means of recreating historical reality in the works of the modern period.
- ItemOpen AccessThe Church transplanted to America. Two historiographic Debates(Edicions de la Universitat de Lleida, 2025) Saranyana, Josep-IgnasiOver the last hundred years, five great historiographic debates have attempted to explain the rapid acceptance of the Christian faith in Mesoamerica and also in the Inca epoch. Of these five debates, two are studied, analysed and are subjected to criticism here: 1st) whether the first Franciscan evangelisation in the central valleys of New Spain was encouraged by “Joachimite” ideal; and 2nd) if a new spirituality penetrated New Spain, hand in hand with the writings of Erasmus, which would have facilitated the approach of the indigenous peoples to the Catholic faith and would have been a spiritual relaxation for the Spaniards transplanted to America, especially to Tierra Firme, in the first half of the sixteenth century.
- ItemOpen AccessTracing the Footprints of Ado’s Martyrology in Hagiographic Collections of the Cathedral of Barcelona: An Attempt at Reconstruction(Edicions de la Universitat de Lleida, 2025) Renedo i Mirambell, ClaraThe utilization of Ado’s martyrology as a secondary source in hagiographic and liturgical compilations during the Middle Ages is a well-documented phenomenon, particularly prominent in Catalonia. However, despite its prevalence, a comprehensive study of this practice is still lacking. This paper seeks to address this gap through an investigation into a corpus of late medieval hagiographic and liturgical manuscripts affiliated with the Cathedral of Barcelona. The paper commences with a concise introduction followed by a comprehensive description of the corpus. The analysis is divided into two main sections: the initial section aims to contextualize the dissemination of Ado’s martyrology in Catalonia and the Eastern Pyrenees region during the Middle Ages, with a specific focus on its incorporation into liturgical and hagiographic collections. The subsequent section is dedicated to a meticulous examination of the entries from Ado’s martyrology within our corpus. This analysis unfolds in two stages: firstly, through a quantitative approach, and secondly, by means of a nuanced philological exploration. Finally, the main findings are analysed in the discussion, followed by the conclusions.
