dc.description.abstractA Total Mixed Ration (TMR, 60 % forage; 23 % NDF) has been compared with Control diet (commercial concentrate (93%) and straw (7%)). Twenty-five beef heifers weaned at 8 months (12 Control, 13 TMR) were controlled during a 120-day fattening period. Intake was controlled daily by diet. Individual weight was recorded every 21 days. At the same control days blood samples were taken and urea, glucose and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) were analysed. Carcass quality and meat color and composition were recorded at slaughter time. Intake was higher in the Control diet, and combined with a low protein level in the TMR (12% vs. 17%) produced a lower average daily gain (20%, p<0.05) in TMR. Glucose and NEFA levels indicated that TMR ration was adjusted for energy requirements of the animals but urea levels showed that TMR diet had some limitation in protein whereas Control diet had an excess. No relevant differences where detected in carcass quality except a slightly lower carcass fat. No differences in muscle or fat colour were detected. The use of on-farm forages in the TMR diet reduces the feeding cost by 43 % compared with the costs of the control diet.ca_ES
