| dc.description.abstract | Todo aquel que se haya interesado por estudiar la Edad Media habrá llegado, más pronto que tarde, a ser testigo de cómo aquellos hombres y mujeres del pasado conseguían, como mediante una alquimia arcana, hermanar corrientes del pensamiento que hoy se nos presentan completamente antitéticas. En pocas experiencias este hecho se manifiesta tan claramente como en los ideales de la caballería, unos ideales que, según sus contemporáneos, Geoffroi de Charny encarnó con todo su ser. Durante prácticamente dos décadas de la Guerra de los Cien Años sirvió a los reyes de Francia, ascendiendo en su confianza por sus hazañas hasta llegar a ser el portador de su estandarte sagrado. A su muerte en la gran batalla de Poitiers (1356), había redactado diversas obras destinadas a la instrucción de otros caballeros desde la perspectiva de una vida íntimamente dedicada a la guerra. En este trabajo exploramos en profundidad la más extensa entre ellas, el Livre de Chevalerie, una fuente incomparable para investigar, sin intermediarios, la experiencia vital de los caballeros; sus hazañas, su ética, las expresiones de su religiosidad y su concepto de la virtud, el amor y las mujeres. Un repositorio profundamente vinculado a la historia social, militar, política y cultural de la baja Edad Media. | |
| dc.description.abstract | Anyone who has taken an interest in studying the Middle Ages will, sooner than later, have come to witness how those men and women of the past succeeded, as if by means of some arcane alchemy, in bringing together currents of thought which today appear to us to be completely antithetical. In few experiences is this more clearly manifested than in the ideals of chivalry, ideals which, according to his contemporaries, Geoffroi de Charny embodied with all his being. For nearly two decades of the Hundred Years War, he served the kings of France, rising in their confidence by his exploits to become their sacred standard-bearer. By the time of his death at the great battle of Poitiers (1356), he had written several works for the instruction of other knights from the perspective of a life intimately dedicated to war. In this thesis we explore in depth the most extensive among them, the Livre de Chevalerie, an incomparable source for investigating, without intermediaries, the life experience of knights; their exploits, their ethics, the expressions of their religiosity and their concept of virtue, love and women. A repository deeply linked to the social, military, political and cultural history of the late Middle Ages. | |
