Abstract
This work aims at writing a chapter on the history of the territory in the early Middle Ages in Europe, with a particular focus on the changes in agricultural landscapes, settlement spaces and religious geography, through the documentation of the monasteries in central Italy, including first and foremost the monastery of Santa Maria di Farfa. The research will focus on determining the importance of the monasterial role within the territory of Interior Abruzzo, in changing the demographic settlements, by founding new villae and curtes or developing pre-existing sites entered in their jurisdiction; contributing autonomously to the development of incastellamento at a significantly early chronological height; controlling the religious context of the cura animarum by acquiring cellae, ecclesiae and oratoria or creating new religious buildings within its possesions.
