This academic research work examines press freedom in European Union countries in the context of the threat posed by far-right political parties to the watchdog function of independent journalism in democracies. The countries examined are Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden. The period covered is from 2015 to 2022, marking an increase in support for far-right parties in several European countries following the refugee crisis in Europe. The project also provides a closer examination of the challenges faced by journalists covering far-right politics across the EU and the differences or similarities found in the countries covered.
