Abstract
The present study investigates the foundation of the Monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll and the development of the patrimony of the monastery by using the available documentation. The goal is to show that the Monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll was an active force in its own territorial acquisitions and in the economic development of the region. The monastery was a comital creation within a specific socio-political, religious and agricultural framework, though as time progressed the monastery became an integral part of the local community and simultaneously gradually developed into a proto-feudal territorial lord, shaping the working relationships between the people and the land. The monastery also helped shape the culture of its surroundings with contributions to the society of the region through literacy, architecture, and education.
