Introduction: People’s life expectancy tends to increase; this fact is accompanied by pathologies typical of old age. One of them is dementia, it is estimated that between 60 and 80% of the population over the age of 65 have it. Dementia is accompanied by cognitive loss, functional autonomy and also the appearance of psychological and behavioral symptoms. The most common treatment has been pharmacological, but non-pharmacological treatments are increasingly being considered as a substitute. One of the non-pharmacological treatments is animal-assisted therapy (TAA). With this work I intend to raise awareness of this type of therapy and develop an intervention aimed at people with mild to moderate dementia who have psychological and behavioral symptoms of dementia. Objective: Through the design of the research project, the aim is to validate the effectiveness of animal-assisted therapies in institutionalized patients with mild-moderate dementia at the Ca la Cileta residence (Palau d’Anglesola) who present psychological and behavioral symptoms typical of dementia. Methods: An analysis of reality is made by conducting a bibliographic search in different databases such as Pubmed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Cihnal plus and on official websites. A meeting was also held with the non-profit association Ilerkan. After the research, a quasi-experimental intervention with a pre- and post-intervention design in patients with mild-moderate dementia from the Ca la Cileta residence will be proposed. The intervention will be carried out by 3 groups of between 8 and 10 people and will be formed by a set of 12 sessions that will be carried out by an expert professional of assisted therapy with animals and professionals of the residence (psychologist, physiotherapist and/or nurse). The sessions will be weekly and will last 3 months. Prior to the start, an assessment of the status of the participants will be carried out using scales to identify the initial abilities and then they will be repeated to see if any improvements are observed. Conclusion: The development of this research project aims to validate the effectiveness of animal-assisted therapies in reducing psychological and behavioral symptoms in people with dementia who are institutionalized in a residential center.
