Biosorption is the passive sequestration of pollutants by non-metabolizing non-living biomass. The technique emerged in 1980's as a possible alternative method for wastewater treatments in an environmentally friendly manner. In this paper it is shown that a basic research in biosorption processes is closely related to the field of Electrochemistry according to the conceptual division of this area in Ionics and Electrodics.

Acid-base properties of brown seaweed biomass considered as a Donnan gel. A model reflecting electrostatic effects and chemical heterogeneity Rey Castro, Carlos; Lodeiro, Pablo; Herrero, Roberto; Sastre de Vicente, Manuel E. (American Chemical Society, 2003)Brown seaweeds are interesting materials to be used as biosorbents for heavy metals due to their high binding ability and low cost. The study of the passive biosorption of protons on this kind of materials and its ...
Removal of inorganic mercury from aqueous solutions by biomass of the marine macroalga Cystoseira Baccata Herrero, Roberto; Lodeiro, Pablo; Vilariño, Teresa; Sastre de Vicente, Manuel E.; Rey Castro, Carlos (Elsevier, 2005)The ability of Cystoseira baccata algal biomass to remove Hg(II) from aqueous solutions is investigated. The mercury biosorption process is studied through batch experiments at 25ºC with regard to the influence of contact ...
Herrero, Roberto; Cordero Pérez, Bruno; Lodeiro, Pablo; Rey Castro, Carlos; Sastre de Vicente, Manuel E. (Elsevier, 2006)Samples of dead biomass from the marine brown algae Fucus ceranoides, F. vesiculosus and F.serratus were studied for their ability to remove cadmium from aqueous solutions. The metal sorption process is rapid, with 90% ...
