Forty eight heifers were used in a complete randomized design to study the effects of a blend of flavonoids rich plant extract (Bioflavex®) supplementation on performance and rumen fermentation of Fleckvieh heifers fed high concentrate diets. Concentrate and straw were both offered ad libitum. The concentrate was supplied along (Treatment CTR) or supplemented with 300 mg/kg DM of Bioflavex® (FL). Body weight (BW), and group concentrate and straw consumptions were recorded weekly. Moreover, sixteen heifers were cannulated to study rumen pH, ammonia nitrogen, and volatile fatty acid concentrations. At 70 d of study, when the first animals reached the target BW, no differences in final BW or ADG were recorded. However, rumen pH was lower (P < 0.001) and rumen molar concentrations of propionic acid were higher (P < 0.05) in FL compared with CTR heifers. In heifer fed high-concentrate diets, flavonoids plant extract supplementation did not improve significantly growth but rumen fermentation conditions improve significantly.
