Nowadays, there is an increase in the usage of the 3D scanners due to their capabilities. They are devices that can simplify lot of tasks. With the data that you can record with these devices, you can generate three-dimensional models that can be used in many fields like engineering, architecture, medicine, archaeology and agriculture. The main goal of this project is to develop a scanning methodology to carry out the 3D characterization of plants. Due to its random grow, it is very difficult to characterize and reproduce the 3D shape of plants. For this reason, when we want to reproduce this shape and volume for technical applications such as technical drawing (BIM) to be later used in simulations (energy simulations), or to be applied for precision agriculture, it is important to have a simple and extrapolable methodology to catch the 3D properties of these organisms. This data can be used to do some research or studies in sustainable construction or precision agriculture. A first step to achieve this purpose is to find the most suitable 3D scanner to characterize the complex plant 3D structure. To develop this methodology, three different 3D scanners have been compared in different situations in order to find the most suitable for this application. The three 3D scanners used were the Kinect v2, the Intel® RealSense™ Depth Camera D435 and the Sense™ 3D scanner. To compare their performance in different situations, several scan events have been conducted under different illumination, also indoor and outdoor. I addition they were tested using different distances between the plant and the equipment. Finally, a whole comparison to find which scanner makes the best measurements was done.
