El poder religiós: llibres il·luminats per als bisbes catalans medievals (segles XIV-XV)

At the beginning of the International Gothic, in Catalonia the presence of high ecclesiastical dignities became remarkable. They were interested in the new artistic innovations coming from beyond the Pyrenees and took part in the order of luxury manuscripts. One of the most interesting personalities was Joan Ermengol, Bishop of Barcelona, former abbot in the monastery of Saint Cugat del Valles which was one of the most important “scriptoria” elaborating illuminated books around the year 1400. In this context, the representation of these prelates in the manuscripts – which were ordered under their explicit wishes – is remarkable. This would generate a repertoire of images which establishes contacts with the iconographic contributions promoted in the papal city of Avignon.
