Testudo hermanni) is widely distributed in western and southern Europe. As reptiles exhibit strong geographical variation in most morphological, as well as life history traits, gathering data from distant areas is important. Here we used Elliptic Fourier analysis to investigate variation in pigmentation pattern of plastron (ventral shell) of 54 western Hermann's tortoises (T. hermanni hermanni) studied in different private breeders, and belonging to two different Mediterranean populations: Albera (Catalonia, NE Iberian Peninsula, n=14) and Balearic Islands (n=40). Based on this sample, it was shown that plastral pigmentation design -history, but differences appeared between geographical populations. These results provide a baseline for further comparisons in variation of plastral pigmentation pattern.

Plastral pigmentation symmetries in Western Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni hermanni)
Parés Casanova, Pere-Miquel; Miralles Bover, Héctor (Scholars Research Library, 2015-01-01)Shape is a fundamental morphological descriptor, one method of its estimation being from digitally processed images. Elliptic Fourier method is an outline-based morphometrics that has some advantages: it does not require ... -
Plastral shape isometry in Western Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni hermanni)
Parés Casanova, Pere-Miquel; Miralles Bover, Héctor (ASD, 2016-01-01)Elliptical Fourier Analysis is a good technique for characterizing the shape of complex biological and non-biological morphologies. The current investigation aimed to study plastral pigmentation contour (black areas of the ... -
Patterning of variation morphology in equine navicular bone
Parés Casanova, Pere-Miquel; Lozano, Sandra (World Science and Research Publishing, 2014-10-25)Size and shape variation in the equine navicular bone is explored through the decomposition of coordinate data into elliptic Fourier coefficients. For this purpose, 10 bony pieces belonging to"Cavall Pirinenc Català" breed ...
