Alternative low cost materials are evaluated through the valorization of by-products derived from mining and metallurgical industry for solid sensible heat based energy storage systems. They were used either as received or formulated as aggregates in mortars, and their thermal and mechanical properties were characterized. A selection methodology was applied in order to compare them with available materials found in the literature for applications as (STES) materials, and with materials from
Cambridge Educational Software (CES) Selector database. It was demonstrated that these recycled materials have a high potential for these thermal energy storage applications.

Selection of materials with potential in sensible thermal energy storage
Fernández Renna, Ana Inés; Martínez, Mònica; Segarra Rubí, Mercè; Martorell, Ingrid; Cabeza, Luisa F. (Elsevier, 2010)Thermal energy storage is a technology under investigation since the early 1970s. Since then, numerous new applications have been found and muchwork has been done to bring this technology to the market. Nevertheless, the ... -
New database to select phase change materials: chemical nature, properties, and applications
Barreneche Güerisoli, Camila; Navarro, Maria E.; Cabeza, Luisa F.; Fernández Renna, Ana Inés (Elsevier, 2015)Today, thermal energy storage materials are proposed as a promising solution to increase the energy efficiency in building sector and to reduce the total energy demand because building sector accounts up to 34% of total ... -
Experimental characterization of a solid industrial by-product as material for high temperature sensible thermal energy storage (TES)
Miró, Laia; Navarro, Maria E.; Suresh, Priyamvadha; Gil, Antoni; Fernández Renna, Ana Inés; Cabeza, Luisa F. (Elsevier, 2014)Nowadays, industrial processes use large quantities of fuel and electricity that produce heat, but much of which is wasted either to the atmosphere or to water. Many types of equipment have been developed to re-use some ...
