Considering that malnutrition is one of the most important problems to be solved by multilateral development agencies, the main aims of this article are: (a) to present an overview of the recent statistics about the levels of starvation around the world; (b) to detail the misunderstandings of Economy and Development Sociology based on the demographic
pressure and the maintenance of tradition; (c) to analyze the consequences of the intervention policies, and (d) to present the theories that pro-pose the importance of inner structural reasons to explain the situation.

We present the results of the archaeological excavation carried out at the Solana del Bepo mine that have allowed us to contextualise the surface finds made in the 1940s. It had been possible to locate the prehistoric workings and to characterise the mined ores by pXRF elemental, -XRF and LIA analyses. The mining implements found in the excavation and the earlier surface finds were typologically described and classified. To precise the chronology a set of samples were radiocarbon dated. The results confirm that Solana del Bepo was an active copper mine at least throughout the first half of the second millennium cal BCE, that is the Early/Middle Bronze Age of northeast of the Iberian Peninsula. The studies carried out there and in other mines in the county of Priorat (province of Tarragona) allow us to advance some considerations regarding the nature of the exploitation of local copper ore, its chronology and the regional dispersion of the metal obtained.

The medieval deserted village of St. Lloreng, a fortified place in the west lands of Catalonia, in Lleida, near Aragon, is studied from its origins in 11th.
century unti1 14th.C. The growth and evolution of population during this time is shown by the houses, placed between the castle and the church, some so simply with only one room, some wider. The authors
don't know why the village became deserted, but they indicate the possible move of the population into the limits of the Ager valley.

This article describes two fragments of the alabaster virgin that presided over the centre altarpiece of the church of Saint Mary in Tamarite in 1504, having been commissioned by the legal representatives of the town of Tamarite and the sculptor Juan Dusi, native of Bruges and resident of Zaragoza. The piece was made just after the completion of the altarpiece, made with panels painted by the Zaragoza-born painters Miguel and Juan Ximénez between 1500 and 1503, and it continued to preside over the presbytery even when the Gothic furnishings were replaced by a new altarpiece, in this case made by the sculptor Juan de Loscertales in around 1682. The sculpture remained in this location until 1936, when material goods of the parish church were destroyed in the context of the Spanish Civil War. Since then, it was believed that the work was missing, hence the relevance of the recently recovered fragments.

Aquests aspectes porten a

The transformation of food ingredients into meals corresponds to complex choices resulting from the interplay of environmental and cultural factors: available ingredients, technologies of transformation, cultural perceptions of food, as well as taste and food taboos. Project PLANTCULT
(ERC Consolidator Grant, GA 682529) aims to investigate prehistoric culinary cultures from the
Aegean to Central Europe by focusing on plant foods and associated food preparation technologies spanning the Neolithic through to the Iron Age. Our paper offers an overview of the lines of investigation pursued within the project to address plant food preparation and related stone tool technologies. The wide range of plant foods from the area under investigation (ground cereals, breads, beer, pressed grapes, split pulses, etc.) suggests great variability of culinarypreparations. Yet, little is known of the transformation technologies involved (e.g., pounding, grinding, and boiling). Changes in size and shape of grinding stones over time have been associated with efficiency of grinding, specific culinary practices and socioeconomic organisation. Informed by ethnography and experimental data, as well as ancient texts, PLANTCULT integrates archa
eobotanical food remains and associated equipment to address these issues. We utilize a multifaceted approach including the study of both published archaeological data and original assemblages from key sites. We aim to develop methods for understanding the interaction of tool type, use-wear formation and associated plant micro- and macro- remains in the archaeological record. Our experimental program aims to generate (a) reference material for the identification of plant processing in the archaeological record and (b) ingredients for the preparation of experimental plant foods, which hold a key role to unlocking the recipes of prehistory. Plant processing technologies are thus investigated across space and through time, in an attempt to explore the dynamic role of culinary transformation of plant ingredients into shaping social and cultural identities in prehistoric Europe.

This paper traces the history of the study of urban form in Spain, paying special attention to the work of geographers. A periodization is established in which Spanish contributions are related to the growth of towns, urban innovations and foreign intellectual influences. The first period lasted from the second half of the nineteenth century to the Civil War (1936-39) and preceded the emergence of academic lines of investigation. The second period lasted from the Civil War until the early 1970s, years of great urban growth with little consideration for the historic past of the town. The 1970s were a decade of reorientation. Many important foreign contributions were assimilated, especially those derived from French urban sociology, Anglo-Saxon urban geography, and Italian architecture and urban history. Since the early 1980s a more interdisciplinary perspective has emerged. The most important long-term change has been the development away from an initial dependence on French research to a greater acceptance of other foreign ideas. The study of urban form has become established as an important field among Spanish scholars.

This paper provides a critical assessment of two major theoretical approaches to the anthropology of religion, the cognitive and the hermeneutical or symbolic approaches, with the aim of reaching some kind of accommodation or compatibility between the two. The paper starts by tracing the theoretical origins of the cognitive perspective to the so-called ‘cognitive revolution’ initiated by Chomskean linguistics and prominent developments of evolutionary biology and psychology that gathered momentum in the
decades to follow. The main contributions of cognitive scholars to the anthropological analysis of religion are highlighted alongside their limitations, which in essence have to do with the failure to grasp the symbolic nature of religious representations. In the end the paper suggests a possible way to overcome those limitations and make cognition compatible with hermeneutical analysis by drawing insights from Weber’s observations on the nature of religious thought.

The contribution of seeds and fruits analyses to the paleoecological reconstruction is minor of the one of the other paleobotanical studies. Of all ways its contribution is very important because it allows identify some plants since species level. Nevertheless, the problems in their
interpretation are multiple and it makes its paleoecological interpretation very complex. The main difficulty derives from the fact that most of the remains comes from archaeological sites. They arrive there like direct or indirect result from an anthropic activity. Seed and fruits of wild plants are the best environmental indicators and they are conserved mainly in anaerobic conditions. Then, the archaeological sites situated in humid environments are the most suitables for paleoecological studies.

The text turns the usual study of political transitions and evolutions in neo-independent Africa on its head by questioning the standard by which they are usually assessed, the ideal model of modern democracy. The text contrasts the oscillations of expert optimism about African states with the repeated empirical evidence of the inadequacy of the state model bequeathed by colonisation to the reality and potential of the African social fabric. The author proposes that many alleged African dysfunctions should be analysed as necessary experiments to ensure the management of diversity in global society, a capacity that is not accumulated by the old European nation-state model, and that may imply abandoning or moderating the principle of the individual as the only ultimate source of sovereignty.

This article investigates the location logic of petty larcenies and mugging with violence and intimidation, for the period: 2008-2011, in three intermediate cities of Catalonia. The aim is to validate and fine-tune previously-formulated hypotheses on crimes which follow patterns of a structural nature, that is, which have a tendency towards territorial stability linked to urban features and functions. These crimes have been compared with crimes against public order and assaults. This study has enabled a definition of the type of areas that attract and stabilise such phenomena; this makes possible consideration of the characteristics of public space that can favour the citizen's sense of securit

Through the Exposición que ha dirigido la Ciudad de Cervera en el Principado de Cataluña a la Regencia del Reino and the extensive presentation sent by the cervarian consistory to Ferdinand VII once absolutism was restored, we can see how during the Liberal Triennium Cervera distinguished itself for its significant support for the royalist cause. Certainly, the unfavourable economic situation caused social frustration which, together with the growing division and politicization sponsored by the secularization of the clergy and the transfer of the University to Barcelona, originated important counter-revolutionary movements. In fact, on May 9, 1822 a royalist uprising led by Pablo Miralles allowed the installation of an Apostolic Junta, the first royalist organization in Catalonia, thus starting the first civil war of the contemporary period. In response, the liberals, exercising a brutal repression, ransacked the population, burned more than four hundred houses and razed their five convents.

A recent rescue excavation revealed three new burials in the necropolis of Les Obagues and demonstrated that the archaeological site still offers further excavation possibilities. The presence of metal was also documented for the first time. The fact that it was deposited in the tomb of an infant contributes to the consolidation of new possibilities in the context of the introduction of the concept of inheritance.

The main objective of this article is to explore the possibility of combining two very different sources in order to study the distribution of industrial activity throughout history. The traditional primary sources to use for this purpose are the official censuses on population and economic activity that have been conducted in the majority of countries since the mid-nineteenth century. However, the majority of these lack detail at the regional level and also with respect to the types of professional occupations that they quantify. In order to complement and profile these census data, we propose the use of another type of information which can also be quantified, but whose characteristics are very different. We refer to the industrial heritage sites identified in digital format in a given territory, which in this case is Catalonia, Spain. This innovative dataset was obtained using digital tools such as web scraping and data mining techniques. This type of historical information was used to check whether it is reliable and valid for interpreting the spatial impact of the introduction of industrial activity. The article also shows that the systematic identification of elements of industrial heritage offers a new and very useful source of information for interpreting the history of industrial geography.

The following study addresses the analysis of the illuminated manuscripts that belonged to the library of Charles of Aragon and Évreux, Prince of Viana, based in two master lines traced after reading the inventory of his belongings -which was made after his death on 21st September 1461. The first one studies the illuminated codices related to his private chapel and the second makes an attempt to approach Charles’s library, Prince of Viana, emphasizing the illuminated manuscripts that have survived to this day. The participation of certain illuminators, such as Guillermo Hugo de Luseyo, who joined the princes’s entourage in Sicily, allows to assess the viability of the artistic routes established between Naples, Sicily and Barcelona during this period.

Before industrialisation the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden) were part of Europe's poor periphery, but over the last century these countries have become some of the richest in the world. This article analyses the origins of Nordic growth from the late nineteenth century, focusing on a previously neglected topic: the role of transportation. We argue that transportation, and most notably large investments in railways, played a key role in Nordic industrialisation. Railways made the exploitation and exportation of natural resources possible in what had previously been isolated areas and helped fuel a process of rural-based industrialisation. By creating conditions that favoured migration towards previously scarcely populated, but economically booming areas, Nordic industrialisation was paralleled by a reduction in regional inequality as measured in per capita GDP. We assert that railways were built before local population growth and helped shape the economic landscape of the entire region. We illustrate these points using maps based on Historical Geographic Information Systems (HGIS) highlighting railways, regional GDP and population densities from the mid nineteenth century until 1960.

This paper analyses the initial period of the establishing of the General Hospital of Majorca, from its founding in 1456 until the promulgation of its ordinances in 1514. To reach this purpose, the paper uses some sources that have not been worked systematically by the previous researches, although they are known, but we also provide some unpublished documents. The General Hospital of Majorca was the result of the union of the pre-existing small hospitals. This procedure was not new, but it was used
in the Crown of Aragon from the founding of the Hospital of the Saint Cross of Barcelona in 1401. The municipal authorities seize the control of the hospital institution, while the Church had a secondary role in the administrative functions. During its first years, the General Hospital must seek to necessary sources
of income to exercise its hospital functions and construct an appropriate building to attend to poor people and foundling children. The Ordinances of 1514 supposed that the institution provided itself with its first regulation. Therefore, the founding of the General Hospital of Majorca has to be framed in the process of unification of hospitals and of laicization of the assistance, both characteristic of the mid-fifteenth century.

The societies living in the present-day Languedoc region during the Iron Age (7th-2nd c. BC) experienced a series of progressive transformations, including a demographic growth and an increase in social differentiation, affecting their economic, social and political structure. This context certainly influenced economic organisation, including farming strategies. However, the relationship between animal husbandry and the economical and political context is not completely understood in Iron Age Languedoc. Two key issues – the feeding strategies and the animal mobility in the hinterlands of Languedoc – are poor known. With the aim of providing new insights into our understanding of animal diet and mobility, we combined zooarchaeology (species representation and mortality profiles), dental microwear, dental mesowear and isotopes –strontium (87Sr/86Sr), oxygen (δ18O) and carbon (δ13C)– on domestic ungulates from five major Iron Age sites: Cayla de Mailhac, La Ramasse, Le Cailar, La Monédière and Lattara. The combination of these approaches enabled us to support the hypothesis of a local breeding of livestock, the animal pasture in nearby areas to the site, and the different animal management between caprines and cattle.

In the Nord-Andean area, the introduction of the Catholic rules of marriage defined a rigid control on the life cycle of the native populations. This process had enormous influence on both biological reproduction patterns, as in the effort to control indigenous people’s behavior and to impose moral values on the
everyday way of life. The data to develop this research comes from the Catholic parish registers of marriages and births (baptism) located at the archives of Toacazo (Cotopaxi, Ecuador) and from the Censuses of 1778 and 1861. The period to explore goes from 1720 to 1861. At the end, this study focuses on the role of matrimony on the demographic and social foundations of family life in an hacienda parish.

The initial period of construction of the Spanish railway network is often criticized for its radial structure, centered on Madrid. In this article, the authors describe the role of the state during the initial stage of railway network construction and confirm that although the political will to construct a centralist network certainly influenced its morphology, other social and economic criteria were also influential. With regard to the political motives behind the radial network, the authors argue that part of this interest could have come in response to perceived needs to strengthen the presence of the Spanish state throughout its national territory and to promote a process of state-building. Finally, it must be stressed that the central hypothesis of our article is that the radial structure of the network was a natural consequence of the strategic geographical position of the country’s capital and of the distribution of economic activity within Spanish territory. The article proposes two methodological approaches for evaluating the extent to which the radial design of the network was justified, bearing in mind the locations of Spain’s most productive regions. The results of these two exercises suggest that the radial configuration with which the Spanish rail network was originally designed probably arose naturally as a result of the distribution of economic activity within the country and of the relative advantage that this bestowed on certain regions due to their geographic position.

a primer pla.

The anonymous Master of the Altar of Rimini, or Master of Rimini, was active during the first half of the 15th century, with a workshop probably located in the south of the historical region of Franconia (in present-day Germany). He sculpted exclusively in alabaster, and his work was exported across Europe as far away as Clerques (France), Utrecht (Netherlands), Wroclaw (Poland), Rimini and Milan (Italy) and Fuerteventura (Spain). Among a considerable body of surviving works are two pieces in Catalonia, one in the Museu del Cau Ferrat in Sitges and another in the church of the Pietat in Igualada. This article carefully analyses them, to justify the attribution of the first, and the incorporation of the second, hitherto unpublished, in the artist’s workshop catalogue.

The effects that urban spaces can have on people have been analysed by various means. However, in the majority of cases, such analyses have been carried out after the event and based on memories of what was experienced. Such an approach can limit the number of emotions identified. The current research analyses the extent to which emotions identified after an event coincide with those experienced in situ (obtained using measurements of heart rate variability). The results highlight relevant differences between the emotions identified a posteriori and those experienced at a given moment. Specifically, significant differences in the perception of space according to gender have been identified: spaces in which fear was experienced and identified by men tended to differ from those identified by women.

In the 1971-1972 academic year, university studies of Philosophy and the Arts were resumed in the city of Lleida. These first steps in the recovery of arts studies marked the starting point of a historical sequence that took place, with progress and setbacks, until the institutional consolidation of university arts studies, of the Faculty and of the renewed University of Lleida (UdL) in 1991, when the Parliament of Catalonia passed an act for its creation. This article provides a comprehensive reconstruction of the resumption of university Arts studies in Lleida at the end of the Franco dictatorship, with the transformation of an elitist university into one for the masses, its consolidation during the nineteen-eighties within the broad process of democratization forming part of the University of Barcelona, first as a territorial division and subsequently as the Faculty of Arts itself, and the academic and institutional development in the nineties as one of the centres constituting the new UdL. The academic and institutional dimension of the last fifty years of the Faculty of Arts is analysed together with its social, cultural and political impact on the social dynamics of the capital of Segrià and the region of western Catalonia.

The Bodleian Library in Oxford preserves in the Canonici Liturgici collection a Carthusian Psalter (ms. 114) (19261) associated with the artistic production of the kingdom of Valencia in the third quarter of the 15th century. This codex, practically unknown to art historians, is interesting because it comes from one of the two medieval charterhouses of the kingdom of Valencia: the Portaceli Charterhouse or the Valldecrist Charterhouse founded by King Martin I of Aragon. The manuscript is illustrated with and interesting image of King David which shows the Flemish influence in the kingdom of Valencia and the unpublished representation of San Martin de Tours. The latter illustration responds to the artistic forms developed by Leonardo Crespí and his miniaturists’ workshop during the second quarter of 15th century. These representations weave a network of contacts with other codices linked to the two aforementioned monastic centres and to the city of Valencia, receiving the northern artistic novelties. The marginal decoration, dependent of Central European models, is another testimony of the confluence of different artistic languages in the Crown of Aragon throughout this period.

The aim of this study is to obtain an overview of the initial bronze period of the Catalan pre-littoral region. It is accomplished with the study of two specific sites which presented originally common morphological, geographical and geological characteristics: Mas d’en Boixos-1 (Pacs del Penedès, Alt Penedès) i Can Roqueta II (Sabadell, Vallès Occidental). These sites belong to two prehistoric habitats which differ from the rest of initial bronze period sites of the pre-littoral region, according
to the number of structures and the amount of information yielded. The analysis of the findings will allow a comparative assay, based upon the data now obtained, and also will bring about the possibility of a certain cultural homogeneity in the pre-littoral depression during the first half of the II millennium cal BC.

In the 1960s, the crisis of the hacienda regime in the Andes of Ecuador signaled the beginning of a vast social transformation. In this process, ethnic identity became a powerful tool used to obtain essential resources and rights for indigenous peasants under the power of rural landlords. Centered on a case study from the province of Chimborazo, in the central mountains of Ecuador, this article reviews the specifics of this long-standing form of domination and explores the form and the impact of indigenous peasant uprisings until the consolidation of agrarian reform from the 1960s to the 1980s. The article discusses the links between the reform, the strengthening of indigenous organizations, and the re-ethnicization of their demands as a structural component of their relation to the state and agencies of development at the beginnings of the twenty-first century. The intention is to contribute to a discussion of aspects of the ethnicization of identities that address other comparable phenomena in the Andean region.

This paper deals with the imagery of the Spanish Reconquest developed from the Friar Martín Sarmiento’s program for the decoration of the new Royal Palace in Madrid, in general, and in the doors’ reliefs of Main Gallery, in particular. These sculptural works, completed between 1753 and 1761, were not only a way to celebrate the glories of Spanish Monarchy in the (Medieval) past, but also, over all, to publicize a new image of the Reconquista that we want to critically revise. Focus will be on the artistic strategies developed in the construction of those images of the Medieval wars between Muslims and Christians, by intellectuals and artists of the Ilustración. In fact, it was precisely in the second half of the eighteenth century when the national myth of the Reconquest was first consolidated.

Before the failure of the inner contrarevolución conducted by the realists to practically start off of the beginning of the constitutional system inaugurated by the revolution of Riego the absolutists elements they organized by means of the celebration of the congress of Verona the invasion of the Spanish territory by the French troops (One hundred Thousand Children of San Luis). The reaction of the Lleida’s local institutions, coverall of the Paeria (city council) was not made hope. Quickly they rejected fervent the foreigner imposition and they organized the inner resistance of the city. Although this hit the economic shortage of the municipal property, reason by which, they had to make a defensive warfare. This tactics were successful since they resisted to the invasion until the last day of the month of October of year 1823, to turned itself together with cities like Barcelona or Tarragona, in the bastions of liberalism.

Montcada’s family had in Middle Ages the Baronia d’Aitona in the land known as Baix Segre, in Lleida. His properties included the villages of Serós, Aitona, Mequinensa, Faió, Vallobar and Maials. This part of the family, who lived in Lleida, is really unknown. Documents from the Arxiu Ducal de Medinaceli a Catalunya have shown new members of this part of the family unknown since now. This new information has allowed to complete the genealogical trees of the Montcada’s family in Lleida.

processos generals a tota Europa.

This article introduces our project on the relationship between railways and real income levels across European regions between 1870 and 1910. While similar relationships have been analysed for the USA, India and individual European countries, our project is the first to take a pan-European regional perspective. We discuss the reasons for the neglect to date, highlighting the need to drill deeper into the changing directional effects of railways on income, the importance or necessity of using regional-level data and the amount of research that still needs to be done. To this end, we present preliminary insights from our novel database on European regional per capita income and railway mileage, after discussing our data sources in depth. We also outline our research agenda, showing our intended conceptual and analytical approach for future work.

The genetic variation of the European population at a macro-geographic scale follows genetic gradients which reflect main migration events. However, less is known about factors affecting mating patterns at a micro-geographic scale. In this study we have analyzed 726,718 autosomal single nucleotide variants in 435 individuals from the catalan Pyrenees covering around 200 km of a vast and abrupt region in the north of the Iberian Peninsula, for which we have information about the geographic origin of all grand-parents and parents. At a macro-geographic scale, our analyses recapitulate the genetic gradient observed in Spain. However, we also identified the presence of micro-population substructure among the sampled individuals. Such micro-population substructure does not correlate with geographic barriers such as the expected by the orography of the considered region, but by the bishoprics present in the covered geographic area. These results support that, on top of main human migrations, long ongoing socio-cultural factors have also shaped the genetic diversity observed at rural populations.

This paper updates the question of plant resources during the Bronze Age and First Iron Age in the Northwestern Mediterranean Basin. Among the cereals, six-row hulled barley is dominant throughout the territory whereas naked and hulled wheats take on greater or lesser roles from region to region. Millet cultivation developed during the Bronze Age and became widespread in the First Iron Age. Apart from cereals, pulses, oil species and fruit appear to be secondary. Results from the study of archaeobotanical remains on wetland sites, however, leads us to question this finding, as oil plants and fruit are much better represented in waterlogged conditions. The cultivation of vine began in the First Iron Age. In spite of a number of characteristics common to plants throughout the study area, regional differences, evident in the Bronze Age, seem to dissipate in the First Iron Age.

In this article, it is presented an unpublished work by the painter Alejo Fernández, active in Córdoba and Seville between 1497 and 1545. It shows the Burial of St Jerome and, according to different evidences, it belonged to the main altarpiece of the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Valparaíso (Córdoba). Likewise, various documents about the work certify that this important altarpiece was commissioned around 1503-1508 by the patrons Diego Fernández de Córdoba and Juana Pacheco to be installed in the main chapel of the monastic church. In this same place the patrons were buried together with other relatives. Finally, it has been possible to track the fortunes of the painting, which was integrated into the Spanish Gallery of Louis-Philippe, King of France, inaugurated at the Musée du Louvre in 1838.

Transport infrastructure played a key role in redefining Finland's economic geography. An empirical investigation involving new gis databases that combine data about railways, population, and administrative boundaries at the municipal level between 1870 and 2000 permits the identification of three main phases of railway expansion: The first phase was a concentration of railways around Helsinki; the second, the construction of a grid-based national railway network, which coincided with a spread of the population into rural areas; and the third, an expansion of the railway into local networks when Finland's industry began to coalesce around metropolitan areas.

66133, 67401 i 67402).
This study represents an approach to the murals of the church of Sant Miquel de Montmagastre (Artesa de Segre,
Lleida), that were transferred to a new support in 1958 and now preserved in the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya
(inv. 66133, 67401 i 67402). The study, apart from the iconographic and stylistic analysis, makes an interpretation of
the heraldic emblems that decorate the bottom of the paintings, which has led to discover that the promoters were
the counts of Urgell, Pere d’Urgell (1348-1408 ) and Margarida de Montferrato (1375-1408).

The spatial concentration of tourists poses a challenge for many cities. Understanding the projected and perceived images of the city via social networks may help to improve management of this phenomenon. That said, social networks tend to be studied in quite a uniform way. The present study analyses the differences that could exist between 784 images posted on the Instagram network by tourist boards (projected) and 10.590 posted by visitors (perceived). The study is based on the case of Barcelona. The use of cartographic analysis tools indicates that tourist boards tend to focus on just a few specific locations. Nevertheless, user-generated images show a wider range of locations, which multiplies by seven the area where the images of the tourist board are concentrated. That said, in both cases, the images posted tend to be located in the central areas of cities. The fact that Instagram tends to reinforce the image of central spaces and that it has only a limited capacity to promote new tourist attractions outside what are already the most consolidated areas for tourism has been underlined.

The historiographic evolution of the concept of feudalism, from its formulation in the 17th century until today, has affected Catalonia differently. In the last quarter of the 20th century, it reached a prominent position as a paradigm of the mutationist model. The numerous sources still conserved, coupled with the enrichment of interpretative perspectives, facilitate a revision. However, it should be undertaken cautiously in light of the pitfalls of the documentation itself and the hermeneutic difficulties. Nonetheless, revision is a challenge that cannot be neglected given that the events that took place in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula between the 10th and 12th centuries heavily conditioned the subsequent history.

Digital tools, and in particular GIS, have enormously increased the possibilities for analysis in historical geography. In this article, we shall explain how these tools can be used to study the evolution of population density over a significant period. The territorial units used will be municipalities, as they allow detailed territorial analysis. However, research projects that take municipalities as their points of reference tend to be complex because their territorial boundaries have often undergone numerous changes over the course of modern history. The same has occurred, to a greater or lesser degree, in all of the countries in Europe (Bennett, 1989). The countries that have had the most stable municipal boundaries over the past 150 years include France, Italy, and Spain, though the modifications to their boundaries have also been notable. However, like all relevant challenges, these changes also offer us new opportunities, if we are able to cope with them. In this particular case, the challenge will be to achieve the territorial homogenization of the historical municipal series. In other words, when the municipal limits have changed, it will be necessary to adapt the data from the old municipal territories to the new ones. This exercise will have a number of applications. In this article, we present just one of these: the possibility of detecting areas and periods in which, over the course of history, there has been population growth, decline, or stagnation. This will serve as a relevant indicator, or proxy, for organizing research in other fields. For example, in the case of economic history, it is clear that variations in the density of population provide clues for interpreting the territorial distribution of economic activity. We also understand that it will be possible to apply our research about Spain to other countries and that this will make it possible to evaluate the interest and results that we can expect from the homogenized work. We think that, despite its interest, this type of study has, until now, been very rare on account of the methodological difficulties involved. However, these new digital tools in the field of historical GIS, as spatial aggregation and Moran I techniques, have helped to provide solutions to assume this challenge.

In 2000 Barcelona’s town hall started the transformation of the old industrial area of Poblenou
becoming a district of the city’s innovation. This change has not been free of critics, most of them done
from the own district. The study deepens into the metamorphosis that the image of this space has
experienced, specially in the field of artistic creation, trying to show how the image spread by the
public administration, mainly focused in physical aspects, doesn’t adjusted completely to the reality. It
is true that in the renovated spaces new enterprises from other areas have been installed or that an
expulsion of the creative population has occurred. Nevertheless, these effects tend to appear mainly in
zones outside the municipal action. In this sense, it is possible to conclude that the changes experienced
have been more important in the level of the projected image by the administration than in the level of urban changes affecting the artists present in the neighbourhood. This local approach wants to show a
bigger problem: the difficulties generated by the change of image of a space. For that reason, it is
necessary to reflect about the role of the image in urban transformations and the possible elements that
determine his successful or failure.

Some studies about biographies of clergymen from Majorca and their families have been published during the last years. This paper focuses on Dionisio Sánchez Muñoz, who acceded to a canonry while his uncle, Gil Sánchez Muñoz, was the bishop of the diocese. But this access was obstructed by the aspirations of Pere Pelegrí, who was a member of the familia of Pope Eugene IV.
Through the judicial trial initiated for this reason, this paper expects to understand how the personal and family relationships had an essential role in granting cathedral sinecures.

The tourism image has tended to be based on a balance between the transmitted image and the perceived image. Throughout the twentieth century, the image issued by governments and companies was predominant. On the other hand, over the last decade, the diffusion of the image perceived by tourists has increased, resulting in a modification of this balance. Based on the case of Uruguay, this article analyzes the extent to which the image that tourists spread on Instagram spatially coincides with the tourist image projected during the second half of the twentieth century. The results show how few areas show temporal continuity. This implies that the interests of companies and institutions do not always coincide with those of the tourist.

This article analyzes the ancient gothic facade of the church of Santa Maria de Tàrrega (Urgell, Lleida), an interesting project of the first Catalan Gothic working one of the most important sculptors of the time, the Master of Anglesola. The study focuses on the analysis of the apostles who decorated the facade, some of them preserved today in the Museu Comarcal de l’Urgell (Tarrega). The portal had to be disassembled in the early eighteenth century as a result of the collapse of bell tower few years earlier, in 1672, an event which led to the construction of a new parish. As for the fate of the sculptures, some of them are reused in the new building, while others moved to other buildings of the town. Recently, there have been two of them for sale, which have been acquired by the City of Tàrrega and deposited at the Museu Comarcal de l’Urgell.

The milling of cereals, other plants and materials is an activity that is essential to the subsistence of human societies. It is a task carried out for the most part by women. Querns are the most representative archaeological artefacts of this activity. However, querns are only a part of more complex operational sequences that stretch beyond these mechanisms and involve other tools such as mortars and sieves that yield a much broader range of cereal products than those commonly identified. This paper reviews a selection of publications from recent decades address this subject from the point of view of ethnography, ethnoarchaeology and archaeobotany, and takes into account a number of features serving to process the more common types of cereals.

This article presents the finds from a cave in the Pre-Pyrenees of Lleida province with two distinct chronological horizons: one Late Neolithic-Chalcolithic and the other Roman. It analyses different hypotheses on the Late Roman cave habitat and places the complex in its overall historical period.

Log Size Indexes (LSI) allow the increase of the number of data and have been used in a number of zooarchaeological studies since 1950. However, some standards to calculate the log ratios remain unpublished, the calculation of the indexes can be tedious, and it is further hindered by the diversity of data recording practices. The R package ‘zoolog’ enables calculation of thousands of log-ratios in seconds, with the advantage that the users can choose between different public references, which increases the repeatability and comparability of the results, allowing the smooth integration of references and databases with heterogeneous nomenclatures. Alternatively, the users may use their own references. This paper presents the main functionalities and procedures enabled by the package ‘zoolog’, together with some examples of use. A real dataset and several examples with R code are provided with the aim of facilitating osteometrical analyses in zooarchaeology.
