Using technology in the classroom context can be an effective way to learn a foreign or second language. Vocabulary is considered one of the important skills for identifying a learner's performance in various academic and non-academic contexts. The present paper investigated the effect of text messaging on learners' lexical knowledge and vocabulary size by using mobile learning ( m-learning). After the administration of an Oxford Placement Test, a total of 37 EFL learners were selected as the sample of the study. Before the treatment process, a word association test (WAT) and the updated vocabulary level test (UVLT) were administered as pre-tests. The learners received six vocabulary items selected from their coursebook through SMSs three times a week in addition to the in-class instruction. After finishing the treatment process, the WAT and the UVLT tests were administered again as post-tests to assess the learners' achievement and the effectiveness of the treatment. Since the normality of data distribution was not confirmed, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test was run for mean comparisons. The findings showed no meaningful difference between the pre-tests and post-tests regarding the vocabulary depth scores, while there was a statistically significant difference based on vocabulary breadth. Therefore, it can be claimed that text messaging via m-learning had a significant impact on learners' vocabulary breadth. Curriculum developers and EFL teachers can benefit from the findings of the current study by considering the significance of text messaging for teaching different aspects of lexical knowledge.

An essential part of nonverbal manifestations is the kinesics that encompasses movements of the human body and the gestures articulated in the face. In a communicative act, the gestures acquire a key importance in the interpretation of emitted messages, being able even to contradict what has been said. In a literary text, especially those of a realistic nature, these gestures correspond to the attitudes of the characters and provide a reliable image of their behaviour and personality. The choice of the kinesic apparatus in a specific work generates in the reader particular perceptual simulations that, in addition, complete the literary interpretation cognitively. The present article aims at examining the kinetic manifestations in the novel L'Assommoir by Émile Zola and to relate its characteristics to the aesthetics of naturalism.

Durante la década de los 60, Corman dirigió siete películas basadas o inspiradas en los cuentos góticos de Poe como son House of Usher (1960), Tales of Terror (1962), The Pit and the Pendulum (1962), The Premature Burial (1962), The Raven (1963), The Tomb of Ligeia (1964) y The Masque of the Red Death (1964).
Despite being considered the father of detective fiction and one of the forerunners of science-fiction, Poe has mainly been hailed for his gothic tales. The ever-lasting spell of his horror stories is due to Poe’s enormous ability to create an effect on the readers that keeps on echoing in their memories ever after. Two hundred years later, some of his readers have become creators and have shaped Poe’s stories providing their own interpretations of his gothic tales. A case in point is Roger Corman, an American cinema director and producer, especially well-known for his B-series films. Poe and Corman share the same goal of producing an effect on the audience either through words or images. Thus, it is no wonder that, among Corman’s most well-known masterpieces, those based on the tales of Poe’s outstand as his most remarkable creations. During the decade of the 1960s, Corman directed seven different films based, or rather, inspired by Poe’s gothic tales, such as House of Usher (1960), Tales of Terror (1962), The Pit and the Pendulum (1962), The Premature Burial (1962), The Raven (1963), The Tomb of Ligeia (1964), and The Masque of the Red Death (1964). Even though they are not strictly faithful to the original texts, through intertextual games and hybridisation, many of Poe’s readers discovered Poe’s gothic tales by means of Corman’s cinematic adaptations. It is the aim of this paper to provide a general outline of Roger Corman’s contribution to the popularisation of Poe’s tales in the 20th century.

Casual sexual encounters are closely wedded to leisure travel, and have received a lot of attention in both theoretical and empirical work. However, the relationship between romance tourism and female ageing remains largely under-researched. This article offers critical insights into the interplay of the successful ageing and sexual relationships abroad of older women travellers. It shows that romance tourism has both positive and negative implications for women’s physical and psychological health and wellbeing. Although exotic escapes help reconnect women with their youthful selves, enhancing a sense of self-confidence and challenging the narrative of decline, casual sex may also generate conflicting feelings once the travel romance is over. This article also encourages the rethinking of the complexities of ageing femininities, sexual activity and health risk in ‘silver’ romance tourism today. Additionally, it argues that the sexual health guidelines and information campaigns should adopt a more multifaceted approach to sexual expressions, and encourage alternative views towards sex and sexuality in later life, in order to not create a rather oppressive ideology among older women.

Positive Psychology was introduced in Second Language Acquisition research in order to explore how positivity can be experienced in the classroom so that learners can flourish in their language learning processes even in averse circumstances (see MacIntyre & Gregersen, 2012). Drawing on theories from Positive Psychology (Fredrickson, 2001, 2013), this study explores moments of positive contact between teacher and students (see Korthagen et al., 2014) via (1) students’ self-reported accounts of their experiences in English learning contexts through four interviews and three focus groups; and (2) observable classroom practices through audio/video recordings of six class sessions. Findings reveal that positive emotion, which is co-constructed by both teacher and student(s) in in-situ interaction, seems to benefit the learner at multiple levels (emotionally, behaviorally, motivationally and cognitively), to contribute to creating rapport between them, and to help fulfill various foreign language learning-related goals.

This article focuses on the impact of the language policy of a highly internationalized Danish university on two different kinds of exchange engineering students from a mid-size Catalan university: those who attend the Danish university for one semester and those who stay for a whole year with the expectation of staying for even longer. The university is highly internationalized, in the sense that (a) half the student population is from 40 different countries and (b) almost all the courses are taught in English. The findings come from the discursive analysis of three group discussions, two with Catalan Erasmus students before and after their stay in Denmark and one with teaching and administrative staff from the Danish university. For the short-stay Erasmus students, the combination of an ELF environment (i.e. one in which English is the only feasible lingua franca) with a teaching style that favors student participa- tion in class contributes to an increase in student self-confidence and, ultimately, fluency. However, for those students who are considering the possibility of extending their stay and even finding a job in Denmark, the scarce presence of Danish within the university environment distorts their perception of the professional environment in Denmark, for which competence in Danish is essential.

The article addresses the representation of China in contemporary crime fiction written in English. A close examination of a selection of works set in China by Lisa See, Peter May, Catherine Sampson, Lisa Brackmann and Duncan Jepson reveals that, following the hardboiled tradition and crime fictions produced in post-colonial times, these narratives scrutinize the West’s many deficiencies. However, the authors do not articulate a truly postcolonial discourse aimed at destabilizing the notion of the assumed superiority of the West and its right to intrude in other countries’ affairs. Furthermore, these narratives seem to be written to confirm the readers’ worst expectations about China, which is fated to stay poor, backward and ultimately Other, unable to achieve some degree of ‘normalization’ or Westernization that could legitimize China’s claims to modernity, improvement and ascendancy in our global economy. Thus, as we vicariously travel the country through these narratives, we face the usual array of fraudsters, tricksters and blood-thirsty murderers that populate crime fictions, but it is China itself that is singled out as the true monster of the stories.

Paralanguage brings together all the audible phenomena that enter into interaction during a communicative act. In a literary text, it has the function of bringing sound effects. Thanks to these elements, we can hear what is only written: noises, the most subtle breaths or even silences. In everyday life, we do not perceive all the sounds in the same way, our brain makes a selection according to what interests us, but in the literature all the noises are im-portant, because they are consciously chosen by the author, often for a deliberate purpose; they create a definite background, reflect a judgment, specify the meaning of the action and the thoughts of the characters.

Study abroad has traditionally been
perceived as an opportunity for students to learn a foreign language by immersing themselves in
the foreign language culture. However, students do so in very different ways. This paper examines
how language instructors and international students at a university in Catalonia (Spain) project
contrasting views of the ‘truly’ intercultural experience abroad and the importance that each group ascribes to learning the local language(s), Catalan and Spanish. The analysis leads to two
main findings. The language instructors legitimise the experience of full immersion in the local
culture as they believe that this contributes to the achievement of high levels of competence in
local language(s). Nevertheless, their position stands in marked contrast to the experience of
the international students, who tend to interact primarily with other international students as
a result of the lack of opportunities that the local students offer them to enter local networks.

Background and Objectives: This article addresses the representations of dementia and caregiving in the fourth age as depicted in Erica Jong’s later-life work. It shows how the experience of parental care leads to the discovery of new ways of human interaction and expressions of personhood.
Research Design and Methods: Framed within literary–cultural age studies, this article shows how humanities-based inquiry can illuminate important aspects of aging and care of the oldest old, which are significant and revealing, but often hidden under the dark shadow of dementia.
Results: Newly discovered ways of communication challenge the notion of the loss of agency as they demonstrate that the body itself has the power of creative and intentional capacities and self-expression.
Discussion and Implications: Care-related narratives offer new insights into aging, dementia, and subjectivity that can help pursue a better analysis of the “deep” old age, strengthen collective solidarity, and manage increasing ageism, especially pronounced during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

The aim of this study is to unveil English learners’ beliefs and emotions regarding the English language education received in Catalan schools. For that purpose, data from 5 focus groups with 31 university students have been analysed through a combination of MCA and small stories analysis. The findings reveal that the participants are dissatisfied with the English language education provided, and they believe that the teachers and/or the system are to blame for their (low) level of English. In the main story analysed, boredom, demotivation, irritation and frustration are emotions attached to English learning in high school, which are also present in most of our subjects’ small stories; it is the repetition (iterativity) of small stories, beliefs and emotions across participants that leads us to the detection of a discourse of victimhood, by which students identify themselves as the victims of their English teachers and/or the education system.

In this paper we evaluate the degree of grammaticalization in Romanian verbal periphrases (VP), attending phenomena such as decategorialization and increasing cohesion. In order to evaluate the degree of decategorialization in Romanian auxiliaries, we focus on properties such as loss of ability to subcategorize a NP, inflection, form of the diathesis or subject selection. With regard to evaluation of the degree of cohesion achieved by the VP, we focus on the loss of the infinitive mark a, the inseparability of V1 (the auxiliary verb) and V2 (the auxiliated verb) when there are two coordinated V2, the impossibility of inserting elements between V1 and V2, or reference to V1 with an anaphoric expression. Our data reveal, on the one hand, that auxiliaries presenting a high degree of decategorialization also present a high degree of cohesion (a putea 'can', a sta 'be about to'), and on the other hand, that auxiliaries presenting few decategorialization symptoms also present a lower degree of cohesion (a căuta 'intend', a da 'be about to').

By its capacity to deal with a reduced content and because it promotes a quick writing style, the genre of the short story provided George Sand with the opportunity to outline her future novels. In the light of these features, our aim is to identify the complex meaning that the author gives to the term "ideal" when applied to many areas: in Jean Ziska it refers to the religious spirit of the Hussites, in Garnier it refers to love as a vital principle, in Kourrouglou it denotes a political position, while in Le foyer de l'Opéra it implies a conception of life, to mention only a few examples. We will try to show that this diversity stems from the fact that for the writer the higher truth deals with a moral and philosophical nature. It is an echo which becomes inseparable from Sand's social and political questions.

The paper analyses how television series Dexter generates complicity with its serial killer protagonist, Dexter Morgan, not only by giving him a heroic edge that overrides the monstrosity of his crimes, but also by focusing on his attempts to blend in and pass undetected by posing as a caring partner, father and co-worker. Dexter’s efforts to curve his inborn violence into submission and to appear as the New Man envisioned in our supposedly post-feminist state of affairs, however, do not prosper and the series ends up promoting an image of men as inherently aggressive, individualist and selfish. Dexter, Iargue, does not manage to countermand a construction of masculinity based on violence and endorses a patriarchal ethos actively and stubbornly engaged in its self-preservation.

Contemporary British society is growing older and older. However, the blind veneration for the youthful and beautiful body, reflection of a range of good personality attributes, is becoming more and more equivocal. Whereas the industrial revolution contributed to the undermining of the social and cultural status of those reaching old age, a contemporary society based on a postmodernist ideology and consumerist culture seems to give an opportunity to those who keep the signs of age at bay from their bodies with the use and abuse of rejuvenatory products and techniques. In this paper, I aim to analyse the contradictions existing in relation to the conceptions of the young and old body and, by extension, of youth and old age in contemporary British and contemporary Western society by analysing Hanif Kureishi’s short story “The Body.” Kureishi pushes such contradictions to an extreme by presenting a surrealist story in which a desire to remain young forever merges with the need to keep one’s sense of self and identity within a community that is increasingly changing ethics for aesthetics.

Although important demographic shifts have generated both an interest and profound transformations in sociocultural interpretations of ageing and old age, the experience of growing older is still perceived negatively and is often measured according to how successfully people adapt to the current Western ideals of later life. In the light of recent research on cultural and literary representations of ageing, this article critically addresses contemporary American writer Erica Jong's mid-life and later works from feminist and gender perspectives. It shows how the author's writings contest the narrative of decline and ageism and incorporate some aspects of positive ageing in terms of body image. Yet, instead of following the model of successful ageing, Jong offers alternative views of ageing femininities and sexuality that enable a different narrative of growing older to emerge. The writer's work also shows that socially and culturally constructed gender and power relationships can be deconstructed, which allows for new forms of self-expression that are not moulded into anti-ageing discourses and their neoliberal imperatives.

This article presents a lexicographic analysis of a subset of verbs that belong to the class of Spanish reciprocal predicates. We have studied 49 polysemic predicates that have at least one pronominal reciprocal sense. This paper first seeks to confirm the hypothesis postulated by Dimitriadis’s (2008), which states that whenever these verbs take the clitic they do in order to help contrast the
reciprocal meaning with other senses. Second, an analysis of how theses predicates are described in three different dictionaries was carried out with the aim to verify if these lexicographical resources identify symmetric uses, taking into consideration that sometimes the non-reciprocal use is semantically close to the symmetric use. Thirdly, since some ambivalence in the lexicographical representation of this class was found, our last objective was to present a representation proposal taking into account all the casuistry observed.

In our increasingly aged societies, old age continues to be equated with decline (Gullette 2004) and becomes the source of the most invisible yet persistent forms of discrimination, namely, ageism (Butler 1969). Even though theatre, like other artistic forms, has traditionally promoted a negative image of ageing (Mangan 2013), some contemporary plays have begun to favour more complex portrayals of old age. Nevertheless, when considered from a gender-based angle, these portrayals often acquire quite a problematic undertone: while roles for older female actors remain exceptional, many peripheral or, if centred, mainly problematic dramatizations of ageing femininity in the theatre arena fuel age prejudice against older women on and off stage. This article offers an age-focused analysis of two plays that counteract stereotypical images of female ageing through various dramaturgical strategies: Michel Tremblay's Albertine in Five Times (1984) and Matt Hartley's Here I Belong (2016). Through a comparative analysis of the Naturalistic and Non-Naturalistic devices employed in the two plays, and the examination of the meanings of age generated by the characterization of the two female protagonists, we hope to demonstrate that Tremblay's and Hartley's texts contribute to creating a truly anti-ageist theatre while at the same time enhancing the visibility of the older woman on the stage.

This experiment aimed to explore the potential of Didactic Audiovisual Translation (DAT) for teaching specialized terminology in the translation classroom. A total of 55 participants were included in the intervention, which consisted of a specialized DAT lesson plan and an ad-hoc questionnaire designed to assess the students' perception regarding the development of their linguistic and knowledge about translation sub-competences in accordance with the theoretical framework proposed by PACTE (Process in the Acquisition of Translation Competence and Evaluation) research group1. The main outcome of this study suggests that DAT can aid in the development of bilingual, knowledge about translation, and psycho-physiological sub-competences, and therefore, enhance the translation teaching experience. The results of this study indicate that the use of DAT can have a positive impact on enhancing and learning specialized terminology among translation students. Moreover, it was observed that DAT can lead to the development of a more holistic development of the competences identified by the PACTE research group. However, it is important to note that further research with larger samples and longitudinal designs is necessary to confirm these findings and fully realize the potential of DAT in the translation classroom. In conclusion, the present study provides empirical evidence that DAT can be an effective tool for teaching specialized terminology and developing linguistic and knowledge about translation sub-competences .

From an interpretive, post-structuralist perspective, this paper analyzes the discursive constructions of fluid migrant identities through the lens of narrative practice. I describe the presentations of the Self /the Other which get inscribed in a series of truncated stories mobilized by three unsheltered Ghanaians who lived on a bench in a Catalan town. I explore their self-attributed /other-ascribed social categories and argue that these multifaceted identity acts are a lens into how heterogeneous migrant networks apprehend social exclusion in their host societies. I show that a narrative approach to the interactional processes of migrant identity construction may be revealing of these populations' social structuration practices, which are 'internally' regulated in off-the-radar economies of meaning. I problematize hegemonic conceptions that present migrants as agency-less, decapitalized storied Selves, and suggest that stagnated populations may also be active tellers who act upon companions and rivals, when fighting for transnational survival in contexts of precariousness.

This study examines the impact of learning context on the L2 pronunciation of 14 Catalan/Spanish-speaking children. Eight children engaged in a two-month study abroad (SA) experience, whereas six students learned English (L2) in their home school. The participants were asked to describe a picture at three data collection times, namely prior to the SA group’s departure to Ireland, immediately after they returned from their stay abroad, and a further year later again. The excerpts were presented to a group of 11 native speakers of English who rated the degree of foreign accent. Results indicate that for the SA group, the difference between the pre- and post-tests was significant, and approaching significance between the pre- and delayed post-tests. For the at-home group of learners, no significant difference was found.

In this article we present our conception of diathesis alternations and how they intervene in the definition of a model of lexical entries. We consider that diathesis alternations are the syntactic realizations of oppositions of a more general semantic nature. We will see how they interact with other components such as event structure and how different semantic classes of predicates arise from that interaction.

Angela Carter (1940-1992) and Lorna Crozier (1948) are two examples of contemporary writers who dedicate part of their work to problematizing historically established constructs that undermine the agency of both nature and women. Carter’s and Crozier’s agenda is, thus, in line with ecofeminist tenets, which are based on the interconnectedness of all living things on a non-hierarchical level. The intention of this article is to conduct a contrastive analysis of Crozier’s and Carter’s retelling of the account of Leda and the swan originally described in Ovid’s Metamorphoses (8 AD) and later in W.B. Yeats’s poem “Leda and the Swan” (1928). We contend that both Carter’s and Crozier’s versions of the myth challenge patriarchal domination by giving voice to and empowering Leda, the young female character in the myth. This empowerment is closely associated to Leda’s harmonization with the natural world, since, by going back to nature, the young Ledas in Carter’s and Crozier’s works come to terms with their adolescent bodies in order to become women stripped of restrictive cultural and social beliefs. Accordingly, the original meaning of the figure of the swan is also subverted to adopt connotations more in tune with the creation of a sense of community that challenge the powerful enclosed violence that Ovid and Yeats attributed to this animal by presenting it as Zeus in disguise.
Yeats “Leda and the Swan” (1928).

The Erasmus student mobility programme allocates three explicit objectives to the experience of spending a few months studying in another European country: (1) to benefit students educationally, linguistically and culturally; (2) to promote co-operation between institutions and (3) to contribute to the development of a pool of well-qualified, open-minded and internationally experienced future professionals [European Commission. 1996. The Obstacles to Transnational Mobility. Green Paper. http://aei.pitt.edu/1226/1/education_mobility_obstacles_gp_COM_96_462.pdf (accessed April, 2015)]. The programme has also sometimes been referred to as one of the most powerful tools of European integration. However, little research has so far been undertaken on how it may alter students’ attitudes towards aspects of European identity and sense of European citizenship. Our study investigates the extent to which the Erasmus experience affects the sense of self as European citizens of a cohort of students from the University of Lleida (Catalonia, Spain). It also explores the students’ position towards the notion of European citizenship and how this relates to the development of their plurilingual competence. Two questionnaires, one before and one after the study-abroad experience, provided quantitative data while qualitative data were obtained through the analysis of discussion groups focusing on aspects of European vs. national identity and citizenship.

Given that summer abroad programs are becoming more and more popular, the aim of the present study is to find out whether foreign language proficiency can be significantly improved during a summer stay of 3-4 weeks. The present study examines learners’ linguistic gains through oral fluency and accuracy measures as well as a listening comprehension task. Learners’ oral fluency is examined in terms of syllables per minute, other-language word ratio, filled pauses per minute, silent pauses per minute, articulation rate, and length of the longest fluent run. The accuracy of learners’ oral production is measured by means of the ratio of error free clauses and the average number of errors per clause. In addition, learners’ errors are classified into 4 categories: morphological errors, syntactic errors, lexical errors and covered errors. Results reveal that these short stays do indeed produce significant gains on most measures, and that proficiency level strongly affects the intensity of learners’ progress.

This comparative study of Tristan Bernays’ Old Fools (2018) and Nick Payne’s Elegy (2016) concerns two contemporary plays in which love manifested in middle-age and older adulthood is a determinant factor in the reconceptualization of the ageing self, particularly when afflicted by memory loss or cognitive failure. Positioned within the framework of theatre and ageing studies, and drawing from their intersection with gender studies and disability theories, the study demonstrates that the narrative arc that both texts recreate is not free of overtones of decline. However, the manipulation of chronological time in both plays through different techniques, as well as the importance of their love story, one between a man and a woman in Old Fools, and the other between two women in Elegy, help disrupt the binary of young/old perpetuated by ageist cultures, and, ultimately, undermine rigid constructions of identity in old age. The article concludes that new theatrical representations of ageing that develop narratives of love not only enable richer debates on the construction of the self, but ultimately contribute to an all-inclusive stage and, with it, to an age-friendly society.

On oubliait
The critics have often placed zévaco in the shade
of the great Alexandre Dumas. They forgot
then that the Corsican writer obtained a considerable
reputation among the readers, some of
them being famous intellectual as the same Sartre.
In Spain the number of translations to the
Castilian of his works, besides the immediacy
of his publication or the fact of possessing an
own collection in some contemporary publishing
houses of prestige confirm the good reception
between the Spanish audience. The article
aims to analyze the force of the mentioned novelist
across the analysis of his reception in the
Hispanic press of the epoch without neglecting
the reference to his translators and illustrators.

The purpose of this paper is to better understand how the participants involved in a specific radio interview use categorization to (re)produce a dominant discourse in the Spanish political arena. In this discourse, politicians are seen as untrustworthy, and certain journalists are portrayed as serving specific political interests. The interview needs to be analysed within its sociopolitical context. The wider context is one in which two new political parties claim to represent a new way of doing politics: old politics is described as opaque and untrustworthy, and they want to create a politics of renewal. The more specific context is the reason behind the interview. It occurs right after the publication of a book of interviews by Maruja Torres, the interviewee, with Manuela Carmena. Manuela is the current mayor of Madrid and an important figure in one of the new parties mentioned above. But most importantly, the interview takes place after several Spanish newspapers focused on a specific statement in the book, in which the mayor admits she feels overwhelmed and tired. This article aims to show the categorial and positioning mechanisms employed by the participants in the interview to co-construct a given discourse regarding the various social actors involved in contemporary Spanish politics. Spanish politics is not just made up of big events; it is also the accumulation of small affairs like this one. When people read these newspaper articles or listen to a radio interview, they must position themselves in relation to the small event, and it is the sum of these stances that configure people’s political beliefs.

The main premise of this article is that asking students of English to analyse their oral productions using measures from the Complexity, Accuracy and Fluency approach might be beneficial for their language learning process. We describe a project that students of the English Phonetics and Phonology course of the English Studies degree at Universitat de Lleida (Catalonia, Spain) carried out during the 2019/2020 academic year. The project helps students improve their transcription skills while stimulating reflection on pronunciation aspects. For this purpose, Praat and Audacity software packages are employed, which are especially suitable to deal with phonemic phenomena that need to be covered in the course, although it is possible to think of adaptations of the project to other types of students so that they could still benefit from it.

Besides presenting classroom interaction from the perspective of native/non-native pairwork, our aim in the present section of this special issue is to analyse those interactional processes which influence the extent to which a task is more or less efficently resolved.
At the same time, in our analysis we take into consideration and compare the interaction taking place between two pairs (immigrant girl/native boy) in carrying out school tasks in English, paying special attention to how and to what extent the interlocutors address themselves interactively towards the immigrant student.

This article presents the adaptations/translations that Poblet did from the French theatre in the sixties of the twentieth century: from the great Molière to the vaudevilles that were successful in France. Except Molière they are forgotten vaudevilles, what shows that Poblet was influenced by the censorship, by the public tastes of the time, by the need to earn a living, and in spite of that, he fought to live his profession and to develop it in Catalan language (without language models and, however, in a «fresh» Catalan).

Previous research has shown that using tools from systems science for teaching and learning in the Humanities offers innovative insights that can prove helpful for both students and lecturers. Our contention here is that a method used in systems science, namely the influence matrix, can be a suitable tool to facilitate the understanding of elementary notions in Aesthetics by means of systematizing this process. As we will demonstrate in the upcoming sections, the influence matrix can help us to understand the nature and function of the basic elements that take part in the aesthetic experience and their evolving relevance in the
history of Aesthetics. The implementation of these elements to an influence matrix will contribute to a more detailed understanding of (i) the nature of each element, (ii) the interrelation between them and (iii) the influence each element has on all the others.

The idea of translanguaging as a potential resource for language and content learning runs counter to “the monolingual principle” (Cummins, 2009), according to which languages should be taught separately in order to (a) avoid interference from other languages and (b) increase the learners exposure to the target language. This study has two main goals: (i) characterise the classroom practices and discourses of two instructors in line with their respective monoglossic or heteroglossic perspective in the context of a university course module on business English; (ii) provide empirical evidence for the impact of translanguaging practices in the form of language learning outcomes. The analysis is mainly based on observations and audiovisual recordings of classroom sessions and the students’ performance before and after a 16-week teaching intervention.

This article analyses two novels by contemporary British author Penelope Lively by focusing on a recurrent topic in Lively's fiction: the interrelation between memory and narrative in order to make sense of lived time as opposed to chronological time. In Lively's The Photograph (2003) and How It All Began (2011), two apparently insignificant episodes force the two main characters, Glyn and Charlotte respectively, to revise their memories as well as life stories when entering their old age. Revising their life narratives by going back to their memories and making sense of their present situations proves to be a rewarding exercise which helps both protagonists to be ready to step into a new life stage. On the other hand, the narrative of each of the novels is constructed through the voices of those family members and friends who are part of Glyn's and Charlotte's past and present, and who contribute to add information to the respective revision processes of the protagonists, showing that time and memory, as well as narrative, are subjective constructed categories.

Contemporary adventure narratives—from westerns and war stories to thrillers and hard-boiled detective fictions—still insistently activate the myth of the frontier, which is offered as a space where men can achieve regeneration and a sense of purpose by indulging a form of masculinity based on violence and aggression. Increasingly, however, the frontier emerges as just a temporary respite and the violence of the protagonists ends up being self-destructive. Sam Hawken’s The Dead Women of Juárez (2011), a crime story situated on the US–Mexico border, is a case in point since the novel reveals the sterility of a myth that transports men to nostalgic spaces and past forms of masculinity rather than compel them to adjust to redefinitions of masculinity based on the incorporation of new (feminine) attributes. In this paper I analyse Hawken’s The Dead Women of Juárez alongside other contemporary texts which, like
Hawken’s novel, locate the male protagonists in frontier scenarios, such as the television series The Shield (Fox 2002–2008), Deadwood (HBO 2004–2006), Jericho (CBS 2006–2008), Breaking Bad (AMC 2008–2013), Dexter (Showtime 2006–2013) and Fargo (FX 2014–). Iargue that, in spite of their deconstruction of the frontier ethos and associated forms of masculine behaviour, they do not contemplate an alternative form of heroic masculinity in a culture in which the lonesome cowboy is still a national icon.

Negative stereotypes about old age abound in our present-day society, which often considers older people as sexually incapable or even asexual. On the other hand, active ageing ideologies foster the practice of sex in later life as a sign of healthy and active ageing. The aim of this pilot case study was to examine the impact that poetry on sexuality, ageing and creativity had on older individuals. In total eight participants, aged 49–76, participated in a workshop offered by the University of Lleida (Spain). The initial hypothesis was that the participants, following the example set by the poems, would produce pieces of creative writing in which they voiced their own concerns and experiences about sexuality in later life from the distance that metaphor grants. While some of the participants’ writings engaged with the poems that deal with sexuality in older age, none of the participants’ creative pieces contained explicit instances of sexual experiences. The analysis of the participants’ creative pieces suggests that: first, they regard intimacy in older age as essential; and second, their unwillingness to write about sexuality in older age is partly rooted in their upbringing during Franco’s dictatorial regime, in which sexuality for non-reproductive aims was constructed as immoral.

Before publishing her seminal novel Rebecca (1938), Daphne du Maurier had published Jamaica Inn in 1936, deliberately setting its action in the nineteenth-century and featuring a young heroine, Mary
Yellan, who, after her mother’s demise, is compelled to live with her aunt Patience and her uncle Joss Merlyn in their gloomy house known as Jamaica Inn. Explicit references to the nineteenth-century become recurrent in the novel; as a case in point, Francis Davey, the vicar in the novel, openly addresses the heroine stating “this is the nineteenthcentury, you know.” Jamaica Inn especially underlines clear intertextual links with early Victorian gothic romances such as Charlotte Brontë’s
Jane Eyre and Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights. This article aims at analysing the intertextuality established between Daphne du Maurier’s novel Jamaica Inn and the Brontës’ canonical nineteenth-century gothic romances so as to highlight Jamaica Inn as a forerunner of Neo-Victorian fi ction as well as to show that not all literary manifestations written at the time of modernism adopted an entirely critical position with regard to the immediately preceding Victorian past.

This study explores how American English and Peninsular Spanish speakers
respond to a compliment. Participants completed an online discourse completion
test with nine different complimenting scenarios. A total of 14 different strategies
to respond to a compliment were found in the data. Based on verbal reports on
language use, it was found that Peninsular Spanish speakers do not compliment
as often as American English speakers do. The data analysis also revealed that
both language groups clearly prefer to accept a compliment, but whereas
American English speakers find a simple ‘thank you’ as an appropriate
compliment response, Peninsular Spanish speakers prefer to agree with the
complimented assertion by making a semantically fitted comment. Other
differences include the importance of returning a compliment in American
English and the need to scale down the illocutionary force of the compliment
among Peninsular Spanish speakers.

From a critical sociolinguistic approach, this paper analyzes the stories of place and locality which emerge during a series of narrative interviews conducted with a small group of Ghanaian migrants who, unsheltered, lived on a bench in a public transport area on the outskirts of a Catalan urban town. By understanding narratives as situated interactional events with which both the researcher and the researched negotiate, shape and co-construct storyworlds, I focus on the social meanings of the stories of geographic (and socioeconomic) dis/emplacement whereby migrants strategically present their spatial orientations in town, which include largely unknown social networking sites. I complement their narrated in-group 'safe mooring' spaces and their out-group zones of 'mismeeting' with guided co-ethnographic visits to these selected locations. I claim that the imbrication of stories of dis/location with collaborative multi-site ethnography contributes to the study of the migrants' alternative spatialization and ethnicization of their host societies, and to the discovery of alternative localities which challenge some conceptions about migrants' (im)mobility practices and identity management in new urban geographies. These may broaden our understandings of how they make sense of their transnational survival experiences in contexts of extreme precariousness, from a dialogical, participant-oriented, reflective perspective.

In Victorian England and 19th century America, adventure stories became a privileged genre to inculcate young men certain values. Despite the pledged universality of these stories, the conceptions of nation and gender present often characterise their country of origin. The English Victorian writer Edward Bulwer-Lytton, in his early novel, Pelham (1828), portrays the young protagonist's journey towards maturity while displaying the values socially sanctioned in Victorian times. On the other shore of the Atlantic, Horatio Alger instigated 'the American dream' through novels such as Struggling Upward (1890), depicting young boys in their adventurous path towards becoming self-made men. It is the aim of this article to analyse how transatlantic conceptualisations of nation and masculinity are constructed in both novels.

Even if A Stir of Echoes (1958) has often been overshadowed by Richard Matheson’s best-known novels I Am Legend (1954) and The Shrinking Man (1956), it should be given the credit it deserves as a novel that functions both as a reflection as well as a source of intertextuality. A Stir of Echoes is rooted in the tradition of the ghost story and the American gothic, but above all, it comprises motifs, characters and twists in the plot that are significantly reminiscent of some of Poe’s most representative tales. Likewise, being the novel that saw the light of day immediately prior to his film adaptations of Poe’s tales, Richard Matheson must have had A Stir of Echoes in mind in order to expand and transform some of Poe’s stories for his screenplays. This article aims to analyse A Stir of Echoes regarding its intertextuality with Poe’s tales, especially with those that Matheson would later adapt to the screen.

Many members of the theatrical profession believe that dramaturgies which subvert the apparently coherent and truthful world offered by Naturalistic aesthetics represent our world of mirrors more faithfully. At the same time, the type of deconstructive acting that is derived from anti-illusionistic playtexts usually exploits the specificity of stage-language more distinctively than the forms of characterization encountered in Naturalistic drama. The power of deconstructive theatrical conventions becomes especially significant in the work of playwrights writing from the marginal position of the migrant and the postcolonial. In the vast landscape of contemporary theatres in English, a case in point is presented by the Afro-Caribbean playwright Edgar Nkosi White, whose extensive dramatic oeuvre theatricalizes the phenomenon of racial oppression from varied angles and using differentiated stage-codes. This article will look at the inscription of anti-illusionistic actoral devices in his plays with the aim of finding out in what ways they express and help to cope with aspects of individual and collective oppression. More generally, it will also attempt to demonstrate the validity of the decontructive mode not only as a performative code to stage the conflicts of our time, but also as an empowering vehicle for actors and spectators alike.

The increasing number of non-native speakers of English in the world is at the
base of recent claims for the need to emphasize the role of English as a lingua franca in the EFL classrooms. This paper investigates Catalan English teachers’ views
on this matter by means of a questionnaire that focused on aspects like preference
of native or non-native language teachers, cultural knowledge of EFL teachers,
and target variety of English. The results indicate that teachers are still strongly
influenced by the supremacy of the native speaker and the vision of English as a
language which is mostly restricted to native English-speaking communities, with
some significant differences found among different groups of teachers.

Since the early 2000s several European countries have introduced language and citizenship tests as new requirements for access to long‐term residence or naturalization. The content of citizenship tests has been often presented as exclusionary in nature, in particular as it is based on the idea that access to citizenship has to be ‘deserved’. In this paper, we aim to explore the citizenship tests ‘from below’, through the focus on the experience of migrants who prepare and take the ‘Life in the UK’ test, and with particular reference to how they relate to the idea of ‘deservingness’. Through a set of in‐depth interviews with migrants in two different cities (Leicester and London), we show that many of them use narratives in which they distinguish between the ‘deserving citizens’ and the ‘undeserving Others’ when they reflect upon their experience of becoming citizens. In so doing, they negotiate new hierarchies of inclusion into and exclusion from citizenship, which reflect broader neo‐liberal and ethos‐based conceptions of citizenship.
